The Pasadena Senior Center will screen “Across the Universe,” a 2007 musical tale of romance, war, and peace set against the songs of The Beatles, on Friday, January 23 at 1 p.m. The free screening is part of the center’s ongoing Friday Movie Matinee series.

The film stars Evan Rachel Wood and Jim Sturgess in a romance between an upper-class American girl and a poor Liverpudlian artist, set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War. Directed by Julie Taymor and written by Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, and Julie Taymor, the PG-13 film runs 133 minutes and features additional cast members including Joe Anderson, Dana Fuchs, Martin Luther McCoy, and T.V. Carpio.

“Watching a movie can be revitalizing and can help viewers relax and disconnect for a couple of hours,” according to the Senior Center’s event description. Each member may bring one nonmember guest to the screening.

The theater has limited seating, and registration is required on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve a spot, call the Welcome Desk at (626) 795-4331 or register online.

The Pasadena Senior Center, located at 85 E. Holly Street in Pasadena, has served the community for more than 65 years as California’s first nationally accredited senior center. Programs are open to members and nonmembers age 50 and older with no residency requirement in Pasadena.
