The Pasadena Senior Center will present a free screening of “Hacksaw Ridge” on Friday, Nov. 14, at 1 p.m. at its Holly Street location.
The 2016 film, directed by Mel Gibson, tells the true story of Desmond Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist who became the first conscientious objector in American history to receive the Medal of Honor. Doss refused to carry or touch a weapon during World War II due to his religious convictions, yet served as a combat medic with the 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division.
Between April 29 and May 21, 1945, Doss rescued approximately 75 wounded soldiers at the Maeda Escarpment on Okinawa, known as Hacksaw Ridge. President Harry S. Truman presented Doss with the Medal of Honor on Oct. 12, 1945, telling him, “I’m proud of you. You really deserve this. I consider this a greater honor than being president.”
The film stars Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer and Vince Vaughn. Running 139 minutes, “Hacksaw Ridge” received six Oscar nominations at the 89th Academy Awards and holds an 84 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Each Pasadena Senior Center member may bring one nonmember guest. The center is located at 85 E. Holly St.
