The Pasadena Senior Center will offer a free online Medicare 101 workshop Thursday for residents seeking to understand the federal health insurance program.

The virtual presentation, scheduled for 10 a.m. Jan. 29 via Zoom according to the event preview, will provide a basic overview of Medicare—the U.S. federal health insurance program primarily for people aged 65 and older, but also available to certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific conditions like end-stage renal disease.

AltaMed Health Group will present the educational session, covering who is eligible for Medicare, what the different parts of the program provide, how to supplement Medicare coverage, when to enroll, and other important facts.

Reassessing health care needs each year, as well as programs that can help keep costs down while maximizing benefits, is essential for aging well, according to Akila Gibbs, executive director of the Pasadena Senior Center.

The event is free, but registration is required to receive the Zoom link.

The Pasadena Senior Center, located at 85 E. Holly Street, is an independent nonprofit organization serving adults 50 and older.

Founded in May 1960, it was the first nonprofit senior center in Southern California and became the first in California to achieve national accreditation in March 1999.

For those seeking ongoing Medicare counseling, the Center for Health Care Rights provides free, unbiased Medicare and Medi-Cal counseling at the Pasadena Senior Center.
