By holding the event at a public library rather than a clinical setting, Heritage Clinic creates a welcoming environment that helps participants bypass the stigma often associated with traditional mental health services. The creative activities serve as a non-threatening entry point for discussing mental health and resilience with seniors who may be isolated or facing early-stage cognitive decline.
Heritage Clinic, a Pasadena-based nonprofit, organizes the workshop under the United Mental Health Promoters (UMHP) program, a flagship initiative of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. The program was significantly expanded by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in 2020 to serve broader demographics, including Black/African Heritage and Asian Pacific Islander communities.
According to the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, “the Promoters Program aims to reduce mental health stigma throughout Los Angeles County by increasing awareness about mental health issues, removing barriers and improving timely access.”
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors extended mental health provider contracts, including Heritage Clinic’s, through June 30, 2026. These services are funded through a combination of Mental Health Services Act (MHSA), Realignment and Federal Financial Participation funds.
