Pasadena Travels | High Above La Cienega: A Stay at AKA West Hollywood

Rock star living, if only for a night

Rock star living in West Hollywood.

There is a moment, as La Cienega Boulevard tilts sharply upward from Santa Monica toward the Sunset Strip, when the city suddenly falls away in the rearview mirror. At the crest of that grade, in a glass-fronted tower that once housed offices, the AKA West Hollywood has turned workaday space into residential luxury.

From our temporary perch, the city stretched eastward like a shimmering carpet, a sunlit Downtown Los Angeles gleaming like Oz. Floor-to-ceiling windows made the view part of the décor, but the interiors hardly needed the help. Every suite comes dressed in polished, contemporary style: spare lines, plush textures, and just enough glossy finishes to remind you this is West Hollywood.

The building holds nearly 190 units, ranging from streamlined studios to expansive penthouses. Our one-bedroom suite felt generous, with separate living and sleeping areas, a sleek state-of-the art kitchen where we made dinner, and a bathroom that could pass for a small spa. Furnishings leaned modern but comfortable—think deep sofas, matte cabinetry, and lighting designed to flatter both people and Instagram feeds.

Definitely a rock star space.

We were meant to stay longer, but a pre-planned jaunt to Palm Springs cut our visit to one night, instead of two. Even so, the evening proved restorative. Morning coffee on the balcony doubled as a private sightseeing tour, with the grid of Los Angeles slowly lighting up beneath the orange-tinted sunrise. The early afternoon stretched into too long on the sofa, the city humming just beyond the glass, before it was time to rush away.

Amenities reinforced the sense of being tucked into an urban resort. The rooftop pool deck offered a bird’s-eye view of Sunset traffic, while the gym carried enough high-end machines to rival a boutique fitness studio. A private cinema space, resident lounges, and an easy walk downstairs to nearby restaurants and shops meant the building functioned as its own small village.

Still, the greatest luxury was space. In a neighborhood where square footage usually comes at a premium, our apartment allowed us to spread out, to live rather than perch. It felt less like a hotel and more like the kind of place you could imagine settling into for months—writing a script, taking meetings, or simply indulging in the rare pleasure of stillness above the city.

When it came time to pack, we did so reluctantly. Palm Springs was calling, but it was hard not to feel we were leaving too soon. A week at AKA West Hollywood would have been easy, maybe even necessary. For now, though, our stay confirmed that this hilltop hideaway delivers exactly what it promises: comfort with a view, and a chance to see Los Angeles from above, at both a literal and leisurely distance.
