Visitors will have the opportunity to meet professional astronomers and learn about their research in various fields, including solar system and exoplanet studies, instrument development, Milky Way and stellar evolution, distant galaxies, transients, and cosmology. The event will feature a tour of the machine shop, where telescope instruments are produced.
For those with burning questions about celestial phenomena, an “Ask an Astronomer” table will be available. Attendees can inquire about stars, planets, quasars, black holes, and galaxies, among other cosmic topics.
One of the highlights of the open house will be the chance to view the sun through a solar telescope. Participants can also experience the Observatories’ 3-D Visualization Lab and tour the historic Hale Library, where they can see historic astronomical images taken on glass plates.
The event will showcase the latest updates on the Giant Magellan Telescope, one of the most powerful next-generation telescopes in development. Children’s activities will include making your own constellation and other fun astronomy-themed activities.
Advance registration for the free event is encouraged, with registrants receiving a complimentary space-themed gift. The Observatories recommend using public transit or rideshare services due to limited parking availability.
Located a 10-minute walk from the Lake Avenue Metro A Line station, the Observatories aims to make the event accessible to a wide audience. Free parking is available at the nearby Sierra Madre Villa station for those preferring to drive.
The open house is part of the Observatories’ ongoing efforts to inspire public interest in space exploration and make astronomical research more accessible to the community. Attendees of all ages can expect an afternoon filled with scientific discovery and cosmic wonder, complemented by free sweet treats for the whole family.
