The Langham Huntington in Pasadena has been named one of the Top 10 Best Historic Hotels in the United States by USA Today.
The historic hotel, which first opened in 1907 as Hotel Wentworth and was purchased by railroad tycoon Henry Huntington in 1911, was among a list of classic hotels nominated for the title by a panel of experts, and later judged in the magazine’s 10 Best 2020 Readers’ Choice Awards.
“In today’s travel landscape dotted with sparkling new resorts and ultra-modern skyscraper hotels, a bit of history is often welcome,” USA Today’s 10 Best said in a statement on its website. “Each of these classic lodgings, nominated for the title of Best Historic Hotel by a panel of hotel experts, has witnessed a great deal of history, and each has held true to its historic roots and unique sense of place.”
The Langham Huntington posted a “thank-you” message on Facebook after being informed of the award.
“We are thrilled to share that we have been named amongst the top ten Best Historic Hotels per @USAToday’s @10best 2020 Readers’ Choice Awards. A big thank you to all our patrons and friends of the hotel that supported us during the voting process. We are equally excited that @LanghamHotels has been named in the top 10 winners in the category of Best Luxury Hotel Brand,” the post said.
After the panel of experts, partnering with 10Best editors, picked the initial nominees, the top 10 winners were determined by popular vote.
The original hotel on the site where the Langham Huntington stands was built by General Marshall C. Wentworth, a U.S. Civil War veteran, and designed by Charles Frederick Whittlesey. Henry Huntington purchased it in 1911, reopened it in 1914 after a major redesign by architect Myron Hunt, and managed it until 1918.
It has changed hands several times since then, until Huntington Hotel Associates bought it in 1987 and proposed a demolition of the main wing to replace it with a replica.
The reconstructed hotel reopened in March 1991, with the new building largely replicating the exterior of the original, but offering modern facilities.
In October 2007, the hotel was sold to Great Eagle Holdings and renamed The Langham Huntington, Pasadena, in 2008, managed by Langham Hotels International.
Today, the hotel has 379 guest rooms, suites and cottages, each designed to reflect the grace and beauty of classic Southern California. The rooms offer expansive views of the surrounding landscape and nearby mountains.
