The workshop is the second in a three-part series exploring Ernest Batchelder’s ornamental legacy through nature’s patterns, following a plants-focused session in December and preceding a cosmos-themed workshop scheduled for February.
Participants begin with a brief discussion and field inspiration on local bird species with a guest from the Pasadena Audubon Society, then translate shapes, gestures and textures into their own relief and surface designs using clay and found materials. Organizers promise sketching, pattern exploration and “creative experiments that guide participants from observation to crafted motifs rooted in ornithological forms, culminating in a collaborative artistic project.”
Hosted at Pasadena Heritage’s historic headquarters, the program is part of a broader effort with Pasadena Museum of History to document Batchelder tile installations and connect public archives with contemporary makers. It is supported in part by a $1,890 City of Pasadena Individual Artist Grant for Shagho’s project “Nature in Relief: Batchelder-Inspired Tile Making with Pasadena Flora,” administered through the Arts & Culture Commission and Cultural Affairs Division.
