Pasadena City College (PCC) will launch its Asian Pacific American Heritage Month celebration in May with a special kickoff breakfast featuring acclaimed performance artist and comedian Kristina Wong.
The May 1 event marks the beginning of a month-long series of activities centered on Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities and their contributions to American culture and history.
“Asian Pacific American Heritage Month provides an important opportunity to recognize and celebrate the narratives, histories and work of AAPI communities,” according to event organizers from the PCC Coalition of Asian Pacific Employees (CAPE) and the Division of Institutional Equity, Diversity and Justice.
The opening breakfast will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Creveling Lounge on PCC’s main campus at 1570 E. Colorado Blvd.
Wong, who will perform and speak at the event, brings impressive credentials as a Doris Duke Artist Award winner, Guggenheim Fellow, and the first Asian American woman named a Pulitzer Prize finalist in drama.
Wong has created several acclaimed solo theater works including “Kristina Wong, Sweatshop Overlord,” “Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “The Wong Street Journal,” and “Kristina Wong for Public Office.” Her performances have been presented internationally, and she has made appearances on late-night television.
The kickoff breakfast is sponsored by the Division of Institutional Equity, Diversity and Justice-APIDA Initiatives and the PCC Coalition for Asian Pacific Employees.
