In a unique musical exploration of liminal states of consciousness, acclaimed pianist Vicki Ray will present “Nacht und Traume” at the Sierra Madre Playhouse on August 3, 2024. The concert, beginning at 7:30 p.m., promises an eclectic mix of classical and contemporary compositions.
Ray, known for her innovative performances and collaborations with contemporary composers, will be joined by guest soprano Elissa Johnston. The program features works ranging from Schubert’s “Nacht und Träume” (c. 1825) to recent compositions like Rachel Beetz’s “Unofficial Dreams” (c. 2022) and Noah Meites’s “Book of Beasts” (c. 2023).
“Vicki Ray is one of our country’s leading pianists of contemporary music,” said Matt Cook, Artistic and Executive Director of Sierra Madre Playhouse. “She has been a staple in the Los Angeles music scene for decades and is renowned far and wide for commissioning new composers.”
The concert will showcase Ray’s versatility, incorporating prepared piano, synthesizer with video, and acoustic instruments, said a statement from Sierra Madre Playhouse. This multifaceted approach aims to provide audiences with a diverse auditory experience, exploring themes of night and dreams.
“Many of the pieces were written specifically for Vicki Ray, showcasing her unique artistry,” Cook added. “She will be performing a blend of older works, creating a captivating evening that balances the old and the new. Vicki is an exceptional artist whose emotional depth and precision infuse every note and phrase with remarkable intent.”
The program also includes works by John Cage, Frederic Rzewski, Andrew McIntosh’s “Intermezzo: December 28, 2020, After Midnight” (c. 2020), Berg’s “Nacht” from Seven Early Songs (c. 1908), and Bill Alves’ “Liminal Landscape” (c. 2012).
The Sierra Madre Playhouse, a historic venue known for hosting diverse cultural events, sees this concert as part of its mission to present world-class artists in intimate settings.
“We’re excited to present her here at the Playhouse and connect with many audience members in our region who are used to driving to the west side or DTLA for events like this,” Cook explained.
This performance follows a series of well-received classical and contemporary music events at the Playhouse. Cook noted that recent concerts have garnered positive reviews, including praise from the Los Angeles Times for their programming.
Looking ahead, Cook revealed plans for a diverse lineup at the Playhouse.
“From performances featuring the Chinese guzheng to world premieres of classical music, as well as dance and several jazz events, audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of world-class local talent,” he said.
“Nacht und Traume” (German for “Night and Dreams”) represents a continuation of the Playhouse’s efforts to expand its genre offerings and reach new audiences. By presenting renowned artists like Ray in an intimate setting, the venue aims to provide unique cultural experiences for the Sierra Madre community and beyond.
