Playhouse Village Comes Alive With Summer Music and Fitness Events

Published on Jul 6, 2024

Playhouse Village in Pasadena is becoming a hub of cultural activity this summer, with a wide array of music events and fitness classes scheduled throughout the season.

The Playhouse Village Association, in partnership with local businesses and organizations, has curated a diverse lineup of musical performances to cater to various tastes and preferences.

One of the highlights is the “Jazz in the Park” series, taking place on Sundays in July from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Playhouse Village Park. The free concerts feature different artists each week, ranging from bebop to bossa nova.

The series is partially funded by Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts and donors of Playhouse Village Foundation, with additional support from Ice House Comedy Club and Pasadena Playhouse.

Attendees can enjoy refreshments from Anaya’s Restaurant or bring their own picnic while listening to performances under the stars. The Elliott Caine Quintet kicks off the series on Sunday, July 7, followed by Jenny and the Jazz Birds, Jasmine, and Little Brazil on subsequent dates.

For those seeking a more intimate jazz experience, Lyd and Mo Photography Studio transforms into a jazz club on the first Friday of each month, hosting up-and-coming artists. Owner Mo Cee collaborates with artist Jason Luckett to organize these events, which have a suggested donation of $20.

Vroman’s Bookstore is also contributing to the musical landscape with its Summer Music Series, co-sponsored by the Pasadena Conservatory of Music. The free concerts take place on the outdoor Paseo stage in the Playhouse Village.

Faculty and students from the conservatory’s Jazz and World Music departments will perform every other week through July and August. The Danny Janklow Quartet is set to perform on July 13.

Several local restaurants are joining in on the musical offerings. El Portal Restaurant features live music every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, while Anayas Restaurant now offers live performances on Sundays for brunch and on Thursday and Friday starting at 7 p.m.

Monopole Wine by RX hosts jazz nights every second and fourth Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a two-drink minimum. The Mixx Pasadena provides an eclectic mix of cabarets, rock shows, and tribute bands throughout the week.

Upcoming events at The Mixx include a Morrissey and The Smiths tribute night on July 18.

For those seeking a midday musical interlude, Pasadena Presbyterian Church offers free “Music at Noon” concerts every Wednesday, featuring a variety of classical and contemporary performances. Upcoming performers include cellist In Hee Na and pianist Shirley Hsieh.

In addition to the music events, Playhouse Village Park is hosting free group fitness classes on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month.

The classes alternate between yoga and other fitness styles such as HIIT and Tai Chi. Archetype Yoga will lead a slow flow yoga class on July 11, while Basecamp Fitness will conduct a HIIT full-body workout on July 25.

For the yoga classes, a limited number of mats will be available for loan to those who don’t have their own. Participants are encouraged to bring their own water bottles for all classes.

These diverse offerings aim to bring the community together and showcase the vibrant cultural scene of Playhouse Village throughout the summer months.
