Some menu items are meant to be savored slowly at a table. Others demand immediate attention.

Case in point: the limited-time “Protein Paradise” sushi roll now appearing at Yama Sushi Marketplace in nearby San Gabriel, one of its three locations. We ordered one the other day, intending to share it with a guest who—through unfortunate scheduling or perhaps terrible luck—never showed up.

Their loss.

With a neatly packed container and a rapidly growing appetite, we drove to a nearby park, found an empty bench under a tree, and proceeded to do the only reasonable thing: devour both rolls.

How could we not?

The roll is a tidy little powerhouse—nori wrapped around half rice and a generous lineup of tuna, yellowtail, salmon, tamago, masago, and mango. The result is bright, fresh, and surprisingly balanced, with the mango lending a soft sweetness that plays nicely against the clean, ocean-fresh fish.

But this roll isn’t just about flavor. Created in collaboration with athlete and fitness creator Stephenie Yuan—better known online as StephySquats—the “Protein Paradise” packs an impressive 40 grams of protein, along with just 9 grams of fat and 29 grams of carbs.

Even better, it’s priced at just $8.39.

The catch? It’s a limited run, available through March 31.

Which means if you’re planning to share one, you might want to make sure your guest actually shows up. Or not. Either way works.
