Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Charles Duhigg will teach participants how to turn difficult conversations into meaningful connections during a free virtual author talk hosted by the Pasadena Public Library on November 18.

Duhigg, whose latest book “Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection” has sold over 1 million copies globally, will share insights from his groundbreaking work on human communication during the hour-long online event beginning at 11 a.m. Pacific Standard Time.

The timing is ideal for those preparing to navigate holiday gatherings and year-end workplace conversations. Duhigg’s research reveals that every conversation falls into one of three types: practical (What’s this really about?), emotional (How do we feel?), or social (Who are we?).

“If you don’t know what kind of conversation you’re having, you’re unlikely to connect,” Duhigg explains.

The writer for The New Yorker won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting as part of The New York Times “iEconomy” team.

His previous bestsellers include “The Power of Habit” (2012), translated into over 40 languages, and “Smarter Faster Better” (2016).

“Supercommunicators,” published in February 2024 by Random House, spent over 40 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list.

The book teaches practical techniques like “looping for understanding”—asking questions, repeating back what you heard in your own words, and confirming accuracy.

Adam Grant, author of “Think Again,” praised it as “a winning combination of stories, studies, and guidance that might well transform the worst communicators you know into some of the best.”

The interactive event includes a Q&A session.

Registration is required.
