PWP: Don’t Let the Grinch Steal Your Holiday Power

Pasadena warns residents of scam calls posing as utility shutoff notices

Pasadena officials are warning residents about scam phone calls that threaten an especially unwelcome holiday outcome: no lights, no power, no heat. The callers falsely claim to represent the city’s water and power utility and warn of imminent shutoffs—claims the city says are entirely fraudulent.

The scam calls, reported to originate from the 818 area code, falsely state that customers’ water and electricity will be disconnected, according to the City of Pasadena.

Officials said the calls are not from Pasadena Water and Power and should be disregarded.

Residents who receive such calls are urged not to provide personal or financial information and to verify any concerns directly with the utility. Pasadena Water and Power can be reached at (626) 744-4005, city officials said.

Additional information about common utility scams and how to protect against fraud is available on the city’s website at PWPweb.com/Fraud

City officials said legitimate communications from Pasadena Water and Power will not involve unsolicited threats of immediate service termination by phone.
