Reggae, ska, and rocksteady will fill the lawn of one of Pasadena’s most celebrated homes on July 10, when the Gamble House hosts the next installment of its Friday Nights summer series.
Musician Alfredo Gonzalez will perform on the grounds of the 1908 Greene & Greene-designed landmark at 4 Westmoreland Place, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event, presented with Altadena-based West Altadena Wine + Spirits, pairs live music and wine flights with informal access to the first floor of the National Historic Landmark — no formal tour ticket required.
The Gamble House, owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by the Gamble House Conservancy, was designed by architects Charles and Henry Greene for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company. The home is widely regarded as one of the most intact examples of American Arts and Crafts architecture in the country, according to the Conservancy.
For the July 10 evening, the Conservancy will open the first floor to guests, with docents stationed in each room to share information about the architecture and answer questions. The access is informal rather than structured — visitors walk through at their own pace while docents offer context about the Greene brothers’ woodwork, art glass, and design philosophy.
Guests can bring a picnic to spread on the lawn or buy Roman-style slices from Triple Beam Pizza, which will have its mobile oven on-site. Wine flights are available for purchase through West Altadena Wine + Spirits, which specializes in organic, natural, and small-production wines from its shop at 2311 North Lincoln Avenue in Altadena. Wine tasters must be 21 or older and show identification at check-in. Outside alcohol is not permitted.
The series, officially titled “Friday Nights at The Gamble House with West Altadena Wine + Spirits,” runs on the second and fourth Fridays of each month from May through August. The July 10 event is the fifth of eight scheduled dates. Remaining performances include the Wise Guys Big Band on July 24, Gal Pearl on August 14, and Pasadena Youth Night on August 28.
Friday Nights at The Gamble House with West Altadena Wine + Spirits takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, July 10, at the Gamble House, 4 Westmoreland Place, Pasadena, CA 91103. Admission for non-members without wine tasting is $5; the wine-tasting ticket, which includes admission, is $40 for non-members and $35 for members, while members who do not opt for the wine tasting enter free and children 12 and under are admitted at no charge.
