Step into the intimate world of English Renaissance chamber music when Andrea Zomorodian joins Tesserae Baroque Ensemble for “private musick” performed as it was originally intended—in a cozy, personal setting perfect for the intricate polyphonic conversations of 17th-century masters.
The September 14 concert at 4 p.m. launches the 30th anniversary season of South Pasadena’s Restoration Concerts, transforming the historic Library Community Room into an English aristocratic chamber where music by Alfonso Ferrabosco II, Orlando Gibbons, Giovanni Coprario, Thomas Lupo and William Byrd once flourished.
Tesserae, a Los Angeles-based period instrument ensemble formed in 2010, specializes in historically informed performances on authentic instruments. The group has previously performed at venues including the Doheny Mansion’s Pompeian Room and Sierra Madre Playhouse.
Zomorodian, originally from Seattle, focuses on oratorio, early music and studio singing. She is lauded for her warm tone, expressivity and “aethereal high notes.” Her singing was described by the Los Angeles Times’ Mark Swed as “sung with blinding luminosity.”
The concert will be held at the Library Community Room, 1115 El Centro St.
The library opened in 1906 as a Carnegie Library, funded by a $10,000 Carnegie Foundation grant.
The season runs through May 10, featuring eight Sunday concerts at 4 p.m. Season tickets are $160, saving $40 over individual prices.
Net proceeds support library restorations and enhancements through Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library, a local nonprofit.
