By day, Ann Noble works as a jail chaplain in Los Angeles County’s lockup system and teaches acting to former gang members at Homeboy Industries. By night this February, she’ll embody one of literature’s most ruthless schemers: Richard III.

“Richard III is the original Game of Thrones,” says director Guillermo Cienfuegos of the production opening February 8 at A Noise Within in Pasadena. “Anyone expecting a dusty, Shakespearean history is going to be very surprised. This production will feel more cinematic, like a Martin Scorsese or a Quentin Tarantino film, and move like a freight train.”

Set in 1970s Britain, the production features Noble—a Chicago native with over 25 years of theatre experience—leading a cast that includes Lynn Robert Berg as Buckingham and Lesley Fera as Queen Elizabeth. Noble earned a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award nomination in 2024 for A Noise Within’s “The Skin of Our Teeth.”

Co-artistic director Geoff Elliott points out the play’s unexpected humor: “People don’t realize how funny this play is. Richard is one of Shakespeare’s most darkly comic characters.”

The production runs through March 8 on the theatre’s 324-seat thrust stage. Running time is 2 hours 30 minutes, including intermission. Four preview performances begin February 8, with “Pay What You Choose” shows February 11 and 12 starting at $10. Opening night is February 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Founded in 1992, A Noise Within has earned multiple Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards and serves 18,000 students annually.

Richard III will run Sunday Feb. 8,  2:00 p.m. A Noise Within Theatre, 3352 E. Foothill Blvd., Pasadena. For more information, call (626) 356-3100 or visit https://www.anoisewithin.org/play/richard-iii/. Ticket: $51.75 – $82.75
