“Cantadoras y Compositoras: An Afternoon of Latin-American Art Song & Arias” brings soprano Maria Brea and mezzo-soprano Jessica Gonzalez-Rodriguez to The Ebell of Los Angeles on Oct. 13, joined by Argentine pianist Mercedes Juan Musotto. The program honors Latina composers including Carla Lucero, Mariel Mayz, and María Grever.
The performance falls within Hispanic Heritage Month and marks a collaboration between The Ebell of Los Angeles and Pacific Opera Project, the company known for reimagining classics with contemporary flair.
Brea has recently performed at Arizona Opera, Notre Dame University, and State Theatre New Jersey. Gonzalez-Rodriguez made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2024 and was a semi-finalist in the 2022 Loren L. Zachary competition.
Musotto, winner of the 2012 Solti Foundation Award, holds a Master of Music in opera conducting from Teatro Colón Art College and serves as opera music director at California State University, Northridge.
The program features works by composers whose names should be familiar but often aren’t. María Grever, acclaimed as the first Mexican woman composer to achieve international success, composed approximately 1,000 songs, including “What a Difference a Day Makes.”
Event organizers describe it simply: “Set in an intimate sun-filled salon, this performance offers a rare chance to experience the soul of Latin-American art song up close.”
