With the Tournament of Roses 2023 Royal Court tryouts process gearing up for an August 1 launch, Pasadena family law attorney Donald Schweitzer sat down to talk with the current Rose Queen Nadia Chung to discover the highlights of her reign so far.
Schweitzer met Queen Nadia at a special Chamber of Commerce event last December before the Rose Parade. To his delight, not only did Queen Nadia sit at his table but he discovered she loves the law and was interested in becoming a lawyer.
And in fact, as a result of that chance meeting, Schweitzer offered her a summer internship with his Pasadena-based Schweitzer Law Partners.
As Schweitzer learns in this interview, Queen Nadia spent an exciting year as Queen, representing Pasadena to the world. She let him in on a few secret tips — like how she prepared for the interviews that earned her the royal spot.
“Well, I tried to think about what are the things that I want to get across because I have 15 seconds for my first interview,” Queen Nadia said, realizing there was no way it was going to go well if she just ad-libbed.
“So I thought, okay, I know the main things I want to get across are that I really care about my community, and I really try to be a good advocate and uplift other people’s voices. So I thought, all right, those are the things that make me me. I’m just going to try in some way, work that into what I say in my interviews.”

Attorney Don Schweitzer heads up a Pasadena family law practice with nine attorneys and 15 support staff. Schweitzer was formerly a deputy district attorney in Orange County and before that had a 10-year career as a police officer, serving as a member of S.W.A.T. and as a homicide detective.
In the early 2000s, he decided that he wanted to serve the people of Southern California in a different way. He left behind his success as a prosecutor and opened a private practice. Together with his wife, Maria Schweitzer, he started a family law practice in the heart of historic Pasadena. In 2003, Schweitzer Law Partners was founded on the same principles that led to Don’s success as a prosecutor – exceptional trial skills, vast knowledge of case law and legal code outcomes.
Schweitzer Law Partners are at 201 S. Lake Ave #800, Pasadena. Call (626) 683-8113 or visit pasadenalawoffice.com
