On Saturday, January 27, at 11:00 a.m., the Salastina Music Society will host “Happy Hour No. 120: The Sacred Veil with Eric Whitacre,” an event offering a unique blend of classical music and contemplative themes. The event, priced between $10.00 and $20.00, promises to be an engaging experience for music enthusiasts and those intrigued by the interplay of music and deeper existential themes.
Set in a marble sanctuary of the Mountain View Mausoleum, bathed in the multicolored light of numerous stained glass windows, the event aims to explore the delicate balance between life and the afterlife through music. The program includes a variety of classical pieces, each chosen for their emotive and reflective qualities. Among them is the slow movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “String Quartet Op. 132,” known for its introspective depth. Additionally, attendees will be treated to the world premiere of an instrumental-only chamber arrangement of Eric Whitacre’s “The Sacred Veil,” a choral work celebrated for its emotional resonance and exploration of life’s transience.
The program also features Juhi Bansal’s “Cathedral of Light,” Olivier Messiaen’s “Louange from The Quartet for the End of Time,” and Eric Whitacre’s “You Feel Like Home: Suite from The Sacred Veil for Piano Quintet.” This selection of music not only showcases the versatility of the performers but also offers a varied auditory journey through themes of light, time, and existential reflection.
Performing at the event will be Kevin Kumar and Maia Jasper White, co-artistic directors and violinists of the Salastina Music Society, along with their fellow resident artists Meredith Crawford (violist), Yoshika Masuda (cellist), and HyeJin Kim (pianist). Eric Whitacre, the composer of “The Sacred Veil,” will also be a part of this musical gathering.
Following the musical performances, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a reception featuring mimosas and pastries, allowing for further reflection and social interaction.
