Science-Driven Play “The New Galileos” Goes Onstage at Caltech

Published on Apr 14, 2021

Theater Arts at Caltech (TACIT) is presenting an online version of “The New Galileos,” written by New York-based actor and writer Amy Berryman, on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, and on Friday and Saturday, April 23 and 24, at 7 p.m. The event will be presented on Zoom.

In “The New Galileos,” three female climatologists find themselves detained by government bureaucrats for their stance on climate change, and are given an option to disavow their research in exchange for millions of dollars… or to disappear.

In an Orwellian nightmare, the scientists discover just how much they can trust each other as they consider the price of their recantation. The play weaves between their current crisis and their pasts, leading them to an interrogation room.

The play was a semi-finalist in the Mach 33 Science-Driven Play Festival, hosted by Pasadena Playhouse and Caltech in 2019. It was also a finalist in the National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center that same year, and a finalist in the Playwrights Realm Fellowship in 2018.

Brian Brophy, Director of Theater Arts at Caltech, is directing. Caltech’s Shiva Mudide serves as the Assistant Director. The cast includes JPL’s Jocelyn Argueta and Charmii Lee, and Caltech’s Kathryn Bikle, Alison Koontz, Emily Kay Lucas, Leslie Maxfield and Monique Thomas.

This play is a free Earth Week presentation by TACIT. To get the Zoom link, register by filling out and submitting the form on https://caltechforms.wufoo.com/forms/zuegma0fz11us/.
