The performance features a modern verse translation aimed at making Shakespeare more accessible while maintaining its artistic integrity.
“Working with Play On is the perfect fit for us, as it builds on what we’ve always done,” said Stephanie Coltrin, Co-Artistic Director of Shakespeare by the Sea and director of the production.
The performance is part of Shakespeare by the Sea’s 28th season, running through July 26, with “As You Like It” following on Sunday, July 20, also at 7 p.m.
The production uses a modern verse translation by Shishir Kurup, adapted by Coltrin as part of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s “Play on Shakespeare” program.
“I’ve cut quite a bit to fit our parameters, which they gave us permission to do,” Coltrin explained.
Shakespeare by the Sea, a nonprofit founded in 1998, will perform in 18 different cities during its summer run.
“I think it’s so important for accessibility. I think it’s so important to give people an experience that they might not seek out and you can’t find anywhere else,” Coltrin said.
