Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” hauled in $71.4 million at the box office this weekend, the second- biggest opening of any film in the pandemic era, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
In Pasadena, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is playing at the Laemmle’s Playhouse 7, 673 E Colorado Blvd.
“Black Widow” — another Marvel film — grossed $80 million at theaters in the United States and Canada when it opened in July. “Black Widow” was made available for an added fee on the Disney+ streaming service at the time of its theatrical release, while “Shang-Chi” is only playing in theaters.
“Shang-Chi” is projected to gross $83.5 million for the four-day holiday weekend, which would break the Labor Day weekend record set by 2007’s “Halloween,” which earned $30.6 over the four days.
The martial arts superhero saga stars Simu Liu in the title role, and also features Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley and Tony Leung.
Universal’s “Candyman” was second with $10.5 million Friday through Sunday, one week after opening in the No. 1 spot with $22.3 million, Comscore reported.
“Free Guy” — which also opened at the top of the box office three weeks ago — was third with $8.7 million.
“Paw Patrol: The Movie” was fourth with $4 million, followed by “Jungle Cruise” with $3.9 million.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Don’t Breathe 2” ($2.2 million), “Respect” ($1.2 million), “The Suicide Squad” ($905,000), “Black Widow” ($748,000) and “The Night House” ($552,000).
Updated figures for the four-day Labor Day weekend will be provided Monday.
