Sierra Madre Playhouse is hosting “Noche Nuestra,” a special evening celebrating Latiné arts and culture, on Saturday, Oct. 19. The event will feature the world premiere of “¡Pasaje!,” a new musical exploring themes of family secrets and self-discovery.

“Noche Nuestra” will begin with a festive pre-show reception showcasing local Latiné artists and offering tacos from a local vendor. Following the performance, attendees can participate in a panel discussion with the cast and creative team of “¡Pasaje!”

The event highlights the importance of representation in the arts, with a particular focus on the Latiné community. Latiné patrons are especially encouraged to attend and celebrate together. For those who prefer another evening, alternative performance dates are available.

“¡Pasaje!,” written by J. Quiroz with music and lyrics by Asdru Sierra and Gary Pickus, follows the journey of 18-year-old Andy. The protagonist travels from Flagstaff to South El Monte, a city just south of Sierra Madre, in search of his father, uncovering family secrets along the way.

The two-act play, which runs from Oct. 4 through Nov. 3, explores themes of identity, belonging, and community through Andy’s experiences. As Andy delves into his Latinx heritage, primarily Mexican and Central American, the story culminates in a celebration of cultural legacy and unity.

Benjamin Perez directs the production, with Greg Porée serving as music director. Sierra Madre Playhouse emphasizes its commitment to inclusive and diverse casting for this and other productions.

For “¡Pasaje!,” the theater is specifically casting actors of Latinx backgrounds to portray characters of Latinx heritage, primarily of Mexican and Central American descent. For productions where characteristics are not specified, the theater actively pursues a diverse cast and welcomes auditions from individuals of all backgrounds.

The play addresses various themes, including community, identity, pursuit of dreams, cultural traditions, home and displacement, love and relationships, inequality, resilience, hope, and family sacrifice. It also touches on issues of limited opportunities faced by people of color pursuing the American dream.

Sierra Madre Playhouse says the production values not only vocal talent but also the ability to embody endearing and genuine characters. The theater emphasizes the importance of actors connecting with the audience and fellow ensemble members to convey the story’s emotional impact.
