Sierra Madre Artist Laurie Devault opens her show at the LMF Gallery May 10.
After weathering the twin challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the destructive Eaton Fire, Sierra Madre’s art scene is staging a creative comeback.
Anchoring this revival is the Baldwin Avenue Gallery (BAG), which has become a cultural cornerstone in the picturesque foothill town.
Founded by Mary Hoffman-Serr and Michael Todd Serr, BAG has offered residents access to contemporary art, sculpture, and photography. Beyond its monthly exhibitions, the gallery also dedicates time and energy to causes like cancer support, reflecting its commitment to the broader community.
Following in BAG’s footsteps, artist and curator Xristine Franco opened the LMF Gallery and The Dark Room last year. Franco has brought a fresh wave of energy to Sierra Madre’s creative landscape, with monthly exhibitions by both emerging and established artists across multiple media, including painting, sculpture, and photography.
The Dark Room, which shares the gallery space, provides photographers with a dedicated area to process actual film and create prints—something increasingly rare in the digital age.
Now, Sierra Madre is taking another step forward. A newly formed town Art Walk Committee—composed of 12 local art enthusiasts—is working to pair artists with local businesses for a monthly art walk that invites residents and visitors to explore creative work throughout the town. The first event will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 20.
Local artists interested in participating may contact Franco at (909) 788-0176 or thelmfla@gmail.com. Businesses wishing to partner with artists may reach out to Kait Walsh at sealedwithakait@gmail.com.
More details are available via the Sierra Madre Art Walk Instagram page.
While the annual Sierra Madre Art Fair concluded this past weekend, the Baldwin Avenue Gallery is currently hosting the “Common Thread” exhibition featuring works by eight local artists. In May, abstract painters Michael Todd Serr and Gorman Bentley will headline a new show, with an opening reception set for May 10. Details are at www.baldwinavenuegallery.com.
At LMF, works by Stewart Feman, Alan Greenberg, and Yoella Razili are now on view. Next month, the gallery will showcase abstract works by Sierra Madre-based artist Laurie Devault, also opening May 10. Visit www.thelmfla.org for more information.
