Sip and Shop Your Way Through Altadena on Saturday

Published on Dec 3, 2021

The Altadena Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the first Holiday Sip and Shop on Saturday, December 4, when holiday shoppers will have the chance to use their Altadena Sip and Shop Holiday passports and visit participating Altadena and Pasadena businesses from 12 noon through 4 p.m. for special deals and promotions.

This holiday shopping event kicks off at the Mariposa Junction, at Lake Avenue and Mariposa Street, with live music by Michael Haggins Band, poetry reading by Hazel Clayton Harrison, food and drinks, vendors, raffle, drawings, and much more.

As a special bonus, participating shoppers will also have a chance to win prizes worth up to $1,000.

The Michael Haggins Band combines jazz and R&B to generate a smooth funk sound, and plays original music and cover tunes of songs by Stevie Wonder, Anita Baker, Sade and R&B classics from the ’70s and ’80s. The group has performed at the Playboy Jazz Festival, the legendary Spaghettini Grill and Jazz Club in Seal Beach, and many other Southern California events and festivals.

Michael Haggins himself is a successful contemporary bass player and songwriter from Pasadena with major music placements of his original songs. Credits include the movie soundtracks for “Hall Pass” and “The First Time,” as well as NBC’s “Community,” ABC’s “Happy Endings,” FOX’s “Raising Hope” and “New Girl,” HBO’s “Ray Donovan,” MSNBC’s Morning Show Wake Up With AL, The Weather Channel and KTLA-TV Morning News Show.

Poet Hazel Clayton Harrison grew up in the Ohio Valley and dreamed of becoming a writer but she knew of no black writers. At Kent State University, she majored in elementary education. She earned a master’s degree in education and began a career in public and private education. While working as a corporate trainer, she pursued her passion for creative writing. In the 1980s her poetry and prose began to appear in various journals and anthologies. She is the author of a children’s book, “The Story of Christmas Tree Lane.” Her memoir, “Crossing the River Ohio,” was published in 2014.

Now retired from the corporate arena, she operates JAH Light Media, her own editing and publishing company, and serves as the 2018-2020 Altadena Poet Laureate for community events. She is a member of the Pasadena Rose Poets and participates in poetry readings throughout Southern California.
