The Opera Buffs, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit founded in 1983, according to the organization, presents six world-premiere mini-operas at Sierra Madre Playhouse on March 7 and 8, 2026, at 8 p.m. each night. Nine emerging singers perform works spanning comedy, grief and everything in between.

The program opens with “A Tall Order,” a comic opera about a disastrous dinner date, with music by John Greer and a libretto by Sheri Wilner. Jean Ahn’s “Remembrance” follows. David Wolfson’s “Rapture” draws on the true story of thousands who believed they would be bodily assumed into Heaven at 6 p.m. on May 21, 2011, based on the predictions of Harold Camping’s Family Radio ministry. Luca Sutto’s “Lost in the Scroll” takes a humorous look at doom scrolling. Roydon Tse and Rachel Gray’s “Grief House” depicts grief as rising water. Zac Flasch closes the evening with “Attached is your invoice,” a comedy about a graduate-student composer navigating the contemporary music scene. All composer and librettist credits are as listed in press materials provided by The Opera Buffs.

Performing are sopranos Oriana Falla, Joanna Kim, Emily Scott and Rachel Yeo; mezzo-sopranos Ashlyn Brown and Sarah Wang; tenors Arnold Livingston Geis and Daniel Voigt; and baritone Adrian Melendrez.

“The show places audiences just feet from the performers, creating a rare, close-up operatic experience,” said Matt Cook, identified in press materials as artistic and executive director of Sierra Madre Playhouse.

Since 1983, The Opera Buffs has assisted more than 700 Southern California artists with $1.14 million in grants and honoraria, according to the organization.
