Slow Down and Stitch: A Hand-Quilting Class for the Overstimulated

In a world built for speed, an evening spent pulling a needle through fabric one careful stitch at a time can feel almost radical. Remainders Creative Reuse invites beginners to try it at an Intro to Hand Quilting class on Thursday, June 18 at 6 p.m. at its Pasadena store and studio, a session built around the beautiful, slow and grounding practice of stitching by hand.

The class is pitched as much for the nervous system as for the craft. Hand quilting, the instructors note, invites participants to slow down, notice their stitches and fall into a repetitive rhythm that can feel calming and meditative. Over the course of the evening, students will cover the fundamentals: the tools of the trade, how to hoop fabric, selecting thread and finding a comfortable stitch rhythm. No experience or supplies are required — fabrics and all necessary tools and materials will be provided.

The setting fits the spirit. Remainders Creative Reuse is a nonprofit creative-reuse center and arts-and-crafts thrift store that diverts thousands of pounds of usable materials from landfills through community donations, then channels them into affordable supplies and low-cost classes in its upstairs studio. The organization’s mission is to make creative expression accessible to people of all backgrounds and budgets while promoting sustainability.
