Snow Cone Social at Caltech Celebrates Equal Access to Education

Published on Jun 22, 2022

Caltech will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX – the landmark federal legislation that requires equal access to education on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and gender expression – with a Snow Cone Social on Thursday, June 23, 4 to 5 p.m. at the west end of Moore Walk on campus.

Spearheaded by the Caltech Center for Inclusion and Diversity (CCID), the event will offer a chance for attendees to meet Caltech’s Equity and Title IX team, learn about resources on campus, and enjoy some refreshing snow cones and sweets.

Title IX is the most commonly used name for the federal civil rights law in the United States of America that was passed as part of the Education Amendments of 1972. It prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or any other education program that receives funding from the federal government.

At Caltech, the Equity and Title IX Office addresses issues of unlawful discrimination and harassment on the basis of race, national origin, ethnicity, sex, pregnancy, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, and other individual characteristics protected by federal and state law. Unlawful discrimination and harassment encompass racial harassment, sexual and gender-based harassment, and sexual misconduct.

The office engages in this mission with students, post-docs, staff, and faculty primarily through consultation, preventative outreach, and collaborative problem-solving.

Information involving any form of unlawful discrimination and harassment can be reported through the Office’s webpage, https://titleix.caltech.edu.
