The oaks along Mission Street will see a familiar procession Saturday morning — Scout troops, Little League teams, kids on decorated bikes — but the banner overhead will carry a date no one alive has celebrated before: 250 years.
South Pasadena’s annual 4th of July celebration returns this Saturday with a day-long program running from a 7:00 a.m. Kiwanis Club pancake breakfast to a 9:00 p.m. fireworks show at South Pasadena High School Stadium. This year’s theme, “From Sea to Shining Sea: 250 Years of the American Spirit,” marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence — a national milestone the city is folding into a tradition that dates back 44 years, according to the City of South Pasadena.
For Pasadena and Altadena residents, the celebration sits roughly three miles south. With all fireworks illegal in Pasadena and the Rose Bowl having replaced its traditional pyrotechnics with a drone show, South Pasadena’s fireworks spectacular represents one of the nearest options for a conventional Independence Day display, according to regional event listings.
The parade, historically known as the Festival of Balloons, steps off at 11:00 a.m. from Diamond Avenue near the South Pasadena Public Library Community Room and travels along Mission Street to Garfield Park, a route of approximately 0.6 miles, according to the city and The South Pasadenan. In past years the route has drawn Scouts, elected officials, local service clubs, Little League and AYSO teams, South Pasadena Tournament of Roses Committee volunteers riding atop the chassis of the city’s Rose Parade float, and children from the South Pasadena Library’s Summer Reading Program, according to The South Pasadenan.
The event was founded in 1982 by civic leaders Ted and Joan Shaw and David Margrave, according to the South Pasadena Review. It began as a youth parade and has grown into a full-day affair.
“If you live in the city, either you’re in the parade or you’re watching the parade,” Sheila Pautsch, the city’s community services director, told the Pasadena Weekly in a prior interview about the tradition.
The day begins with the pancake breakfast at 7:00 a.m. at the South Pasadena Fire Station at 817 Mound Avenue, followed by an opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on the steps of the Library Community Room at 1115 El Centro Street, according to the city. After the parade, Garfield Park at 1000 Park Avenue hosts family-friendly activities, food vendors, and games until 2:00 p.m.
The evening celebration moves to South Pasadena High School Stadium at 1401 Fremont Avenue. Gates open at 7:00 p.m., live entertainment runs from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and fireworks begin at 9:00 p.m. Gates close at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door; children 2 and under are free. A 3% convenience fee with a $2 minimum applies to card purchases, according to the city. Attendees should bring a copy of their receipt and tickets.
