When Spanish artist Teodoro Nieto Antón sells his paintings, the money funds beds in Mexican orphanages, vaccinations in Africa, house rentals in Guatemala, and student scholarships worldwide.

The 81-year-old artist from Ayllon, Spain, will bring his exhibition “Monarchs and Meninas” to San Marino’s Crowell Public Library this Saturday. The free opening reception runs 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., with the exhibition continuing through November 12.

“Teodoro has an altruistic soul with great compassion, which has allowed him to live to paint, not paint to live,” according to the Rotary Club of San Marino, chartered in 1939, which sponsors the event with Club Rotario Tijuana Independencia.

The exhibition features works exploring intense colors and feminine inspirations, drawing from Diego Velázquez’s masterpiece “Las Meninas.” The 1656 painting depicts Spanish royal court ladies-in-waiting.

Velázquez served as leading court painter during Spain’s Golden Age, influencing artists including Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, who said, “Velázquez is a genius whose talent surpasses the art of painting.”

Nieto Antón’s works have appeared in international sales at Austin Auction between 2021 — 2024.

After establishing his visual arts career, Nieto Antón became passionate about social responsibility, now traveling constantly to auction works for humanitarian aid.

Opening Reception: Monarchs and Meninas by Spanish Artist Teodoro Nieto Anton will run on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Crain Art Gallery of the Crowell Public Library, 1890 Huntington Dr., San Marino. For more information, call (619) 267-8657 or visit https://www.sanmarinorotary.org/.
