Whether or not you’re a fan of Valentine’s Day or Galentine’s Day, the day before Valentine’s Day made popular by the show “Parks and Recreation” to demonstrate the love we have for women friends, both of these celebrations provide an opportunity to try new things.
One great idea would be to learn how to make candles, which is what Ten Thousand Villages, a Pasadena-based nonprofit fair trade retailer of artisan-crafted home decor, personal accessories and gift items, will be teaching at its virtual workshop at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13.
This Galentine’s Day Build-A-Candle Workshop is being held in cooperation with Made by DWC, a purpose-driven social enterprise created by the Downtown Women’s Center in Los Angeles to empower women to break the cycle of chronic homelessness through employment.
Ten Thousand Villages has been holding the candle-making workshop in person over the years since they opened in Pasadena — the first Ten Thousand Villages store in California — in June 2006. But the current COVID-19 pandemic has made this option unfeasible, so just to be able to keep on with the tradition, they’ve decided to do it online, with kits available for purchase and pickup before the workshop Saturday.
The kits are necessary so you can actually make the candles at home as you attend the workshop. You can purchase them at Ten Thousand Villages Pasadena, at 567 S. Lake Ave., or online through www.villagespasadena.com. At the store, they’re open everyday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for a limited number of shoppers.
After your purchase, a link to the online workshop will be sent to your email.
Proceeds from the event will be for the benefit of the Downtown Women’s Center and its mission to support homeless women in downtown Los Angeles.
