Are the kids bored again on a Saturday?

The Altadena Public Library has a 45-minute virtual event that is perfect for any young science lover.

On Saturday, Jan. 23, Dr. Ben Hamlington, a research scientist in the Sea Level and Ice Group at JPL’s Earth Sciences Section, will be showing some exciting STEM experiments on Zoom starting at 11 a.m., and participants can ask any questions at the end of the session.

The event is ideal for kids from kindergarten to fifth grade.

Hamington is the current team leader of the NASA Sea Level Change Science Team. He studies the ocean with a particular focus on sea level variability on interannual to decadal timescales. He has also done considerable work on understanding sea level during the 20th century, comparing historical in situ data to modern satellite observations.

In his research, Hamlington is interested in how sea level responds to both natural and anthropogenic forcing, and what this will mean for coastal populations both now and in the future. He is also a member of NASA’s Ocean Surface Topography Science team.

He has a bachelor of science degree in aerospace engineering and a master of science degree in mechanical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, and a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering sciences from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
