The ghosts and goblins descending on Kidspace Children’s Museum this Sunday won’t be trick-or-treaters — they’ll be marionettes dancing on strings, part of a theatrical tradition that has enchanted audiences for more than six decades.

Bob Baker Marionette Theater will present two preview performances of “Halloween Spooktacular” on October 5 at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. in the museum’s Stone Hollow Amphitheater. The 25-minute shows, priced between $13.50 and $15.50, offer families a taste of what the theater calls “an hour-long, family-friendly boo-sical revue featuring over one hundred spirited puppets rallying to regale you with silly things on strings.”

The preview promises “fuzzy monsters, wild witches, out-of-this-world aliens, and silly dancing pumpkins” — all brought to life by the artistry of a theater whose collection exceeds 3,000 handcrafted puppets developed over more than six decades.

“As an extra-special treat to our other Halloween festivities, on October 5 at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., Bob Baker Marionette Theater presents a preview of Halloween Spooktacular,” according to Kidspace Children’s Museum’s event description.

For families seeking Halloween entertainment that trades jump scares for gentle thrills, this collaboration between two Los Angeles–area institutions offers a chance to experience the increasingly rare art of marionette theater in an intimate outdoor setting.

Bob Baker’s Hallowe’en Spooktacular will run on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Kidspace Children’s Museum, 480 N Arroyo Blvd, Pasadena. For more information, call (626) 449-9144 or visit https://kidspacemuseum.org/event/bob-bakers-halloween-spooktacular-3/. Ticket prices: $13.50 – $15.50
