Step Inside a Masterpiece: Gamble House Opens for Craftsman Week Tours

National Historic Landmark offers rare glimpse into Arts and Crafts movement with original furnishings intact

When Charles and Henry Greene designed the Gamble House in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company, they created an architectural masterpiece that would help define the American Arts and Crafts movement.

Now, on October 16, Day 5 of Craftsman Week offers one-hour docent-led tours throughout the day.

“Immerse yourself in the legacy of Greene & Greene and the artistry of the American Arts and Crafts movement. Begin with a docent-led tour of the Gamble House, a National Historic Landmark showcasing exquisite handcrafted details and original furnishings,” Pasadena Heritage describes in its event promotion.

The house exemplifies the work of Greene & Greene, the Pasadena firm whose architecture and furnishings helped shape Southern California’s early 20th century artistic heritage. Unlike other Greene & Greene homes that have been altered or stripped of original furnishings, the Gamble House remains substantially in original condition with all architect-designed furnishings still in situ.

Docents lead explorations through rooms lined with rare woods, featuring handcrafted details, fixtures, and furnishings designed by the architects and unique to the house.

“This was such a well-done tour by caring staff, and the perfect date day for us… I can also easily be bored by guided tours, but this was fascinating and one hour was just the right amount of time,” visitor andrealulu noted in a March 2024 review.

Standard one-hour docent-led tours of the Gamble House are priced at $15 for adults, with senior and student discounts available at $12.50.

Craftsman Week Day 5: One-hour Docent-led Tour of the Gamble House will run on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. The Gamble House, 4 Westmoreland Place, Pasadena.
