Children ages 7 to 12 can explore the art of still life from ancient Egypt to Picasso’s modernist masterpieces at a free program Wednesday at Hastings Branch Library, where a Norton Simon Museum educator will guide young artists in creating their own compositions.
Jeanette Joslin Russell, an art educator and artist at the Norton Simon Museum, leads the “Art with Jeanette — Still Life” program at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the library at 3325 E. Orange Grove Blvd. The hands-on workshop teaches children about still life as a main genre of Western art while they create compositions using line, pattern and color.
“Things that do not move” — from seashells to insects — will inspire the young artists’ work, according to the library’s program description.
Registration is required through the Pasadena Public Library’s online event calendar.
Russell, who is based in Pasadena, has led the recurring series at library branches.
The Norton Simon Museum maintains active educational partnerships with the Pasadena Public Library, with museum educators leading summer programs at local libraries. The museum conducted 70 free school tours reaching approximately 2,300 students in grades 5 to 12 during the 2022-2023 school year, with about half from Pasadena schools.
The program is part of the Pasadena Public Library’s programming across nine branch libraries.
Hastings Branch Library is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
