A meticulously preserved Pasadena estate spanning five acres and boasting over 15,000 square feet of living space will open its doors for public tours this spring.

The Bauer Estate & Gardens, designed by renowned architect Reginald D. Johnson and built by Peter Hall of Gamble House fame, has been chosen as the 60th Pasadena Showcase House of Design, organization officials announced on Tuesday.

The property, maintained by only two families since its construction in 1928, features extensive gardens designed by Katherine Bashford, one of America’s earliest female landscape architects.

“With its esteemed pedigree, we feel incredibly lucky to present Bauer Estate & Gardens as our 60th Pasadena Showcase House of Design,” said Matt McIntyre, 2024/2025 President of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts.

Since its founding in 1948, the organization has provided more than $24 million in support, including its Music Mobile program reaching 125,000 third-grade students, and its Youth Concert series.

Following a four-month renovation, thirty designers will reimagine the estate’s interior and landscape spaces, incorporating contemporary design trends while respecting the property’s historic character.

The City of Pasadena recognized the estate’s significance in its 2012 study of Historic Designed Gardens, and it is currently under consideration for the National Register of Historic Places.

The showcase, running from April 20 through May 18, 2025, will welcome over 30,000 visitors to explore on-site restaurants, boutique vendors, and special events including Easter celebrations.

Additional programming includes guest chef dinners, special brunches, live music performances, and docent-led garden tours, with Dunn-Edwards Paints continuing its 60-year role as exclusive paint supplier.

The annual event serves as the primary fundraiser for Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, which contributed $1 million to local music and arts programs during the 2023/2024 program year.

Visitors can purchase Golden Tickets for unrestricted access at pasadenashowcase.org/tickets, while Insider Packages offer exclusive previews at January’s Empty House Party and April’s Premiere Night Gala.

Regular timed entry tickets will become available in early February for the showcase, which has awarded over $700,000 in prizes through its Instrumental Competition program.
