Stonefire Grill is a little mountain of yum.
Stonefire Grill, tucked into the Hastings Ranch shopping corridor, has never pretended to be anything more than a wood-fired counter spot with tablecloth ambitions, and that honesty is precisely what makes it work.
The format here sits somewhere between fast-casual and full service. Diners order at the counter, then find a table and pour their own drinks and grab their own flatware, while the kitchen sends a server out with the food itself. It is a small hybrid that works in the restaurant’s favor. There is no long wait to be seated, no lingering over a menu while a hostess finds a booth, but the food still arrives at the table rather than being handed across a counter. In a Southern California summer defined by heat and short patience, that middle ground feels less like a shortcut and more like a small mercy.
And we were there to drown ourselves in the Summer menu.
The burger, built on a glossy brioche bun, holds up its end of the bargain. Ground chuck arrives well charred beneath melted cheddar, shredded lettuce, tomato, caramelized onion, and pickles, all finished with the house special sauce. It comes with a choice of fries or the restaurant’s garlic thyme chips, thin, well-salted, and fried to a color just short of amber, paired with a small ramekin of chipotle-spiked dipping sauce.
The chips themselves deserve their own mention. They are not an afterthought. Cut in-house and fried hot, they have the kind of crackle that makes it hard to stop reaching for them, even with a burger still half-finished on the tray.
For those looking to counterbalance the richness, the new Mediterranean Market Salad offers real relief. Grilled chicken, quinoa, chickpeas, cucumber, tomato, and crumbled feta are tossed together with pickled red onion, whose vinegar bite cuts cleanly through the dish. It reads more Mediterranean taverna than mall food court, and tastes it too.
Everything is served on metal trays lined with tissue printed with the restaurant’s flame-scrawled logo, a small design touch that turns a fast-casual meal into something with a bit more intention behind it. Takeout is equally well handled, packed in sturdy plastic bags stamped with ordering information for those who would rather eat on the porch than the patio. And we carried two happy bags home.
Stonefire Grill, admittedly one of our favorite Pasadena eateries is not chasing trends. It’s built something dependable, quick without feeling rushed, and comfortable without asking much of the diner beyond an appetite. In a season when everyone is looking for something easy that still tastes like it took effort, that dependability counts for a lot.
