Pianist Hank Mehren has established an unlikely tradition in Pasadena: world-class jazz performed on Sunday mornings at a neighborhood coffee roaster, where improvisation mingles with espresso machines and casual conversation.

The Gold Line Jazz Collective takes the stage every Sunday at Jones Coffee Roasters, drawing an ensemble of accomplished regional musicians who understand that jazz doesn’t require a darkened room or a two-drink minimum. Mehren, who is “well-known locally and internationally for his incredible musical abilities,” leads an ensemble that shifts week to week. “This jazz collective expands and contracts throughout the year, integrating local talent from South Pasadena, Pasadena, and the greater Los Angeles area.”

That fluidity—the rotating cast of musicians who show up to play alongside Mehren—has become the collective’s defining characteristic, creating a natural laboratory where jazz musicians test ideas and build community through performance.

The group’s musical palette spans cool jazz, hard bop, and Latin fusion. The Sunday morning timing represents a deliberate choice, positioning live jazz as part of the morning ritual rather than a nocturnal indulgence.

For Pasadena’s jazz community, the weekly gathering has become something more than a performance schedule. It’s a reliable space where musicians can play and where neighbors encounter live music during their weekend routine.

The Gold Line Jazz Collective will run on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Jones Coffee Roasters, 693 South Raymond Avenue, in Pasadena. For more call (626) 564-9291 or visit https://www.jonescoffeeroasters.com/pages/events.
