Talks & Telescopes Scheduled for June 4 at Mount Wilson

Astrophysicist and Mount Wilson historian Dr. Eun-Joo Ahn looks at the contributions of women scientists during the first decade of Mount Wilson Observatory ‘Talks & Telescopes’ at 5:30 p.m. on June 4 at Mount Wilson.

The event will focus on  Louise Ware and Jennie Belle Lasby, Dr. Ahn analyzes their designation as “Computers” – measuring positions or spectral lines of photographic plates – and reveals how their activities contributed enormously to the scientific discoveries and achievements that made Mount Wilson the center of 20th century astrophysics.

Dr. Eun-Joo Ahn is an astrophysicist with a PhD from the University of Chicago and a PhD Candidate in History at the University of California Santa Barbara, specializing in the history of Mount Wilson Observatory and other vital astronomical institutions.

Guests can also explore the recently opened NASA’S Hubble Traveling Exhibit in the Mount Wilson Museum (connected to the Auditorium), for a chance to explore Hubble Space Telescope accomplishments with a replica of the telescope and interactive displays.

Parking is located on the grounds, and a small shuttle is available for those with disabilities.

 After the presentation, both the 60-inch and the 100-inch telescopes – the largest in the world available to public access – will be open for celestial viewing.

Bring a picnic or purchase dinner from a food truck – and enjoy an evening surrounded by the natural beauty of Mount Wilson and the mysteries of the Universe.
