Tesserae Baroque plays Sierra Madre Playhouse on Friday. The concert begins at 8 p.m. and runs until 9:30 p.m. at 87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd.
The program explores the evolution of the trio sonata throughout the Baroque period, in works by Castello, Rossi, Bach and others.
In the trio sonata ideal, musical texture became stratified between a bass and two upper parts — a shift away from the equal polyphonic textures of the mature Renaissance style. The middle of the texture is provided by the relatively simple chordal structures of the basso continuo. The trio sonata, along with opera, was one of the defining genres of the Baroque style.
The playhouse is at 87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. in Sierra Madre. The box office number is (626) 355-4318.
