In response to the Coronavirus crisis, the Caltech Y has started offering free online math and science tutoring to Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) 6th-12th grade students and Pasadena City College (PCC) students. The tutoring is provided by Caltech undergrad and graduate students to assist in the transition to remote learning.

The Caltech Y has been offering personalized tutoring on Caltech’s campus for the past 14 years.

The new Y-Tutor program is intended to reach a wider audience in the community. The program is designed to help students gain greater competency in math foundations, improve skills in math and science and prepare students for college-level math and science. The program has a one-to-one tutor to student ratio, and tutors offer academic tutoring as well as mentoring. In the last month, we have offered close to 500 one-on-one tutoring sessions to students in the Pasadena community.

PCC engineering student, Ellis Sentoso, reflects on his experience in the program, “I received tutoring for physics, and the tutors helped me understand challenging concepts. This is my last semester at Pasadena City College and I am preparing to transfer to a four-year university, so I am glad to have access to this amazing tutoring platform.”

65 percent of PUSD students did not meet the math standard in the 2019 California Smarter Balanced test results and this pandemic has the potential to further exacerbate achievement gaps. The Caltech Y has responded by providing access to high quality tutoring by knowledgeable Caltech tutors.
