Rose Bowl Brings Back Pasadena’s Cinco De Mayo Celebration With A 5K Run and Walk, Named for Retiring Stadium GM Darryl Dunn

Published on Apr 29, 2022

The Darryl Dunn Cinco de Mayo 5K Run and Walk will take place on Sunday, May 1st at 9:00 AM prior to the Cinco de Mayo at the Rose Bowl family festival on the field. The 5K, with a 1K option for those who want to participate in a shorter distance, will be the healthy start of what promises to be a fun-filled day with access to resources, information and reconnecting on the field.

The Darryl Dunn Cinco de Mayo 5K Run and Walk is affectionally named after the Rose Bowl Stadium’s, CEO/General Manager, Darryl Dunn who is retiring June 30th, after 27 years with the Stadium. Darryl is an avid walker who is often seen around the recreational loop just outside the gates of America’s Stadium. We invite you to join us for a fun run, brisk or leisure walk.

“During one of these walks around the stadium, we discussed the topic of bringing back Pasadena’s Cinco de Mayo celebration, after more than a decade of its absence. The idea got in Darryl’s head of making this return a reality and hosting the event inside on the iconic field of the world-famous Rose Bowl.” Recalls Ramon Miramontes, the co-executive producer of the event with Darryl Dunn.

The day won’t end there. We’d invite you to join us for the free Cinco de Mayo at the Rose Bowl event beginning at 10:00 AM. Families will be able to enjoy traditional music featuring live performances from mariachi to La Sonora Dinamita, Folklorico dancers, watch a soccer tournament and enjoy an active children’s play area, stroll an art and culture area featuring local artists and learn about local area resources and services from a health and wellness area.

Mayor Victor M. Gordo and Alice Mijares Recendez whose mother, Jesucita Mijares founded Mijares Mexican Restaurant in Pasadena in 1920, will be honored as the inaugural Cinco de Mayo Co-Grand Marshals. Both have a long heritage and history in Pasadena which makes them the perfect fit.
