In a rare public appearance, legendary sound designer and editor Walter Murch will pull back the curtain on six decades of Hollywood’s most groundbreaking work during an exclusive conversation at ArtCenter College of Design on August 13.

The Academy Award-winning filmmaker, whose innovative techniques revolutionized how audiences experience films like “Apocalypse Now” and “The Godfather” trilogy, will discuss insights from his new book, “Suddenly Something Clicked: The Languages of Film Editing and Sound Design,” during the 6:30 p.m. event in ArtCenter’s Ahmanson Auditorium.

“It’s a ‘twisted rope’ of theory, practice, and history,” Murch explained about his book’s structure during a recent podcast appearance.

The master craftsman, who remains passionate about his craft, often reflects on the evolution from analogue to digital editing.

“You can’t do that with digital,” he observed when comparing analogue Moviola editing to modern workflows.

ArtCenter Film faculty member Stephen Berkman will lead the wide-ranging discussion with Murch, who has been nominated for nine Academy Awards and nine BAFTAs, winning three of each.

Following the conversation, Walter Murch and his wife, author Muriel “Aggie” Murch, will sign copies of their respective books.

Three free film screenings precede the main event: “Apocalypse Now” on Tuesday, August 5, “The Conversation” on Wednesday, August 6, and “Her Name was Moviola,” a 2024 documentary about Murch, on Thursday, August 7.

All screenings begin at 6 p.m. in the same auditorium.

The timing coincides with the American Film Institute conferring upon Murch an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree on August 8.
