[UPDATED] The Pasadena Senior Center has canceled its upcoming Fall Masters Series on gemstones due to unexpected circumstances, officials announced.
The six-part educational program, “The Science and History of Gemstones,” was scheduled to run from November 12 through December 17 on Tuesdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., featuring geologist and University of Southern Indiana instructor Carrie Wright.
Wright, who has taught geology and environmental science for over two decades in both college settings and to the general public, holds master’s degrees in Geology with a mineralogy focus, Science Teaching with a historical geology focus, and English. She has taught undergraduate courses in Geology at the University of Southern Indiana since 2006.
The weekly series would have explored gemstone science and history through six themed sessions: gemology basics and identification methods; geological origins and formation processes; the science and historical lore of gem colors; colored stones including rubies, sapphires, and emeralds; diamonds and the DeBeers monopoly; and historical crown jewels with focus on the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The cancellation was due to an unexpected circumstance, but officials are hopeful it will be rescheduled for the future.
The Pasadena Senior Center, which operates as a donor-supported nonprofit without government funding, provides more services to older adults than any other organization in the San Gabriel Valley. The center’s mission focuses on improving older adults’ lives through social interaction, fitness programs, education, volunteerism, and community activism. The center operates Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.
