The Traditional Wistaria Festival Returns Sunday

Published on Mar 26, 2022

The Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce and the City of Sierra Madre once again bring you the 2022 Wistaria Festival, showcasing the Sierra Madre Wistaria Vine, listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as “the largest blossoming plant in the world.”

The Wistaria Festival is on Sunday, March 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Every spring, more than a million gorgeous purple blossoms drape from the tangled branches of this “Lavender Lady,” as some call it.

The seeds originally came from China, and two homeowners planted it in 1894 to celebrate their new house. The wistaria plant eventually grew so large it destroyed the home it was planted to honor. The vines now occupy a staggering one-acre stretch of space on the property.

Take note that the Wistaria Festival is the only day in a year that you can view the Sierra Madre Wistaria vine, since it’s on private property along Sierra Madre Blvd. The Festival wasn’t held in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.

When you visit, you can send a greeting card with the official Wistaria postmark, visit local shops and more than 100 crafters and food vendors, and view the Sierra Madre Auto Show and the Packard Auto Show.

The organizers have also set up a shuttle tour of historic Sierra Madre landmarks for you to see. All local restaurants will be open, and musical performances are available throughout the day. Some of the musicians lined up include Zen and Trio, harpist Ron Longo, Gem City JazzCats, Kids Rock “Surge,” and Lonny Sotelo and Ocho-X.
