Sierra Madre Playhouse’s intimate room rarely gathers three comics with résumés this varied. On Tuesday night, the 99-seat house brings together Brendan Scannell, Laurie Kilmartin and Andrea Jin for an evening of stand-up that draws from late-night writing rooms, Netflix specials and Juno Award-winning comedy albums.
Scannell, an actor and comedian, was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Actor in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series for his lead role in the Netflix series “Bonding,” after starring as Heather Duke in the Paramount adaptation of “Heathers.” He has appeared on Taylor Tomlinson’s “After Midnight,” Apple TV’s “Loot” and Hulu’s “Bromates.” Vulture named him a “Comedian You Should and Will Know” in 2018, and Just for Laughs selected him as a New Face of Comedy the following year.
Kilmartin, a finalist on season seven of “Last Comic Standing” and a longtime staff writer for “Conan” on TBS, has performed stand-up on “Conan,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and Showtime, and at festivals from Aspen to Edinburgh to Montreal. Her comedy has tackled some of the toughest territory in stand-up — grief, hospice and death — in addition to the more familiar topics of everyday adult life.
Jin, born in Shanghai and now based in Los Angeles, won Comedy Album of the Year at the 2021 Juno Awards from the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for her solo album “Grandma’s Girl.” She has made her late-night debut on “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” was a staff writer on Andy Samberg’s Comedy Central animated series “Digman!” and was featured on Vulture’s 2023 “Comedians You Should Know” list.
