A mumps outbreak at a Berkeley private school shouldn’t be funny, but Jonathan Spector’s “Eureka Day” proves that even well-meaning Board of Directors can descend into spectacular chaos when crafting the perfect vaccination policy.
The Tony Award winner for Best Revival of a Play is currently running at the Pasadena Playhouse through October 5, with performances including Friday, Oct. 3 at 8 p.m. When progressive board members attempt to create a “perfectly inclusive” response to the health crisis, their passive-aggression explodes into hysterical meltdown—a premise that Time Out New York calls “comic gold” and The New York Times declares “one of the funniest plays to open this year.”
Directed by Teddy Bergman, the production features two-time Obie Award winner Mia Barron, who appeared on Broadway in “The Coast of Utopia,” and two-time Obie Award winner Cherise Boothe. Bergman brings recent experience from directing “Urinetown” at NYCC Encores ! and Broadway’s “KPOP.”
“Eureka Day” earned its Tony for Best Revival of a Play after a successful Broadway run from December 16 to February 16 at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Spector, a MacDowell Fellow, originally saw his work premiere in the Bay Area, where it won the Bay Area Theater Critics Circle Award for Best New Play in 2018.
The one hour, 45-minute production runs without intermission. The Pasadena Playhouse offers accessibility options including Open Captioned and Audio Described performances.
“Eureka Day” will run on Friday, Oct. 3 at 8 p.m. The Pasadena Playhouse, 39 S. El Molino Ave., Pasadena, CA 91101. For more information, call (626) 356-7529 or visit https://www.pasadenaplayhouse.org/event/eureka-day/. Ticket prices: $40-$117.
