The ancient sound of the pipa, a four-stringed Chinese lute, will resonate through Barrett Hall next month as the Pasadena Conservatory of Music presents a free concert introducing audiences to traditional Chinese folk instruments.

“Echoes of China: Folk Music Traditions through Pipa, Guzheng, and Erhu” takes place Saturday, February 7 at 7 p.m., featuring five musicians performing solo and ensemble works. After the music ends, audience members will be invited onto the stage to see and try the instruments themselves.

“The three instructors of PCM’s upcoming Echoes of China program present solo and ensemble performances as well as provide introductions to their respective traditional Chinese instruments (Pipa, Guzheng, and Erhu),” according to the conservatory’s event description. “Following the performances, there will be a Q&A with the instructors as well as an interactive experience, where audience members will be invited on stage to see and try the instruments!”

The concert features Celia Yu Liu on pipa, Susan She on guzheng (a Chinese zither), Xiaobo Li and Shutong Li on erhu (a two-stringed bowed instrument), and Nathan Wang on piano.

The concert serves as a gateway to new Chinese folk ensemble courses at PCM for both youth and adults, taught by Liu, She, and the elder Li. “This course offers an immersive introduction to Chinese folk music through hands-on study of the pipa, guzheng, or erhu,” the conservatory states. “No prior experience with Chinese instruments is required.”

Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance.
