Art students from the Pasadena City College (PCC) are presenting to the public works of art in an exhibit called “Soup.”
The exhibit, which opened to the public last week, will run until December 3 at Gallery V on the main college campus. It is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., from Monday through Friday, and closed during holidays.
Brian Tucker, Associate Professor at PCC said students exhibiting are enrolled in a studio art course (Art 145, Portfolio Development and Critique) in the Division of Visual Arts and Media Studies.
He said the course is one of the studio art courses at PCC which helps students transition toward achieving their academic, professional, and personal goals.
One purpose of the course is to help more advanced students build a focused, high-quality portfolio of their work, according to Tucker.
Tucker said the exhibit will feature the student artists’ work in a diversity of art and design practices, including graphic design, prop making and traditional studio arts.
“There are suites of digital illustrations, a pair of masks, a ceramic piece with a spike-filled interior space lit by tiny LED lights, and more. Students also designed the signage and labels used in the gallery,” Tucker said when asked what people can expect at the exhibit.
Tucker said the students were given the freedom to decide the materials for their artwork so that they would learn how to function as an independent artist.
“There were no restrictions or expectations about the materials or content of their works.”
“The idea is for them to function as independent artists and designers, rather than follow instructions. In every case, the students have created new work for the exhibition; some present works made prior to the class in the gallery alongside the new pieces.”
Featured in exhibition are pieces by Elizabeth Allen, Tania Cortez, Bilal H. Flier, Kristin Fikel, Miles Jopling, Darlene Kelly, Nicole Lacasse, Daniel Ortega, Johanna Pineda-Sandoval, José Revuelta, Alanna Rutledge and Karen Zacatelco.
Aside from the Soup exhibition, there is also an ongoing Juried Student Exhibition at PCC, according to Tucker. The exhibit is being held at the Boone Family Gallery in the Center for the Arts, the building adjacent to Gallery V.
Tucker said the two exhibits mark the reopening of the campus galleries which have been closed since March 2020 after the COVID shutdown.
Tucker expressed hopes members of the community will come visit the exhibits to see the students’ works.
“It is a blast to be in a room filled with new art, especially if it has been a while since you’ve visited a gallery.”
“I hope people will come see it! And while on campus, also visit the Juried Student Exhibition. This is an exceptional opportunity to see what student artists have been up to at PCC,” Tucker said.
